  German Special Interest Group

A Pioneer Miller in South Australia - The life of Johann Daniel Schlinke

presented by Philip Mann, who will present virtually from Australia

The British established a colony in South Australia in December 1836. Daniel Schlinke came to South Australia with Old Lutherans from Posen, then in Prussia, on the Catharina in 1839, who were escaping religious persecution, and was a prominent figure in early South Australian German activities. From his successful courtship of 16-year-old Bertha Teusler, while she was also attracting the interests of Missionary Schürmann, to his establishment of early flour mills at Bethany and Tanunda, he was an active member of German Barossa society. It is a sizzling tale of some intrigue and also includes the movement of two of his sons and his second wife to Sausalito and San Francisco, California. He is a 2xgreat uncle of the presenter.
