Saturday Morning Class

Topic: Colonial California and its Records

Speaker: Colin Whitney

California was not always part of the United States and has a rich a colorful history. The Spanish were first Europeans to set foot in this state and settlement began in 1769 with the establishment of presidios, missions and pueblos. In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain and ruled California until the Mexican-American war concluded in 1848 with California becoming a territory of the United States. Records from this period reflect its evolution from colony to statehood.
