Origins and Descriptions of German Last Names
Andre Hammann
Last names can tell us so much about our family history. Understanding the origins of your last name might help you discover where your first ancestor came from. The meaning of the name might reveal how he looked, his occupation, who his mother and father were, or where he was from. For instance: Müller (the most common German last name), means Miller (a person who works in a grain mill), so the profession of the first carrier; but if it's "Möller," it might be more specifically a Miller from northern Germany.
