    Fall Seminar

For our Fall Seminar we welcome back Dr. Michael Lacopo who will share a variety of search strategies using the internet and newspapers. He will also talk about searching for those invisible ancestors and about manuscripts.

Session 1:   Strategic Searching: Using Internet Indexes and Search Engines Wisely.   The advent of online databases has been an incredible resource for genealogists, but is your ancestor still missing? Take control of your search on Ancestry and FamilySearch and learn about other Internet tricks to find your people!

Session 2:   “She Bore her Suffering with Christian Fortitude”: Using Religions Newspapers and Periodicals.   Denominational newspapers are incredible sources as they often contain obituaries and biographical information decades before traditional community newspapers did so. Learn where to find these gems, what they contain, and how to use them.

Session 3:   “I am Poor, Obscure, Plain, and Little.” Researching the Invisible Ancestors.    If your ancestors had little money, they did not buy and sellland, they did not leave wills or probates, they did not purchase stones for graves. How do you find them? This lecture will show you how!

Session 4:    Magnificent, Magical, Mesmerizing Manuscript Collections.   These types of records form an enormous part of most archival collections, yet most genealogists grossly underutilize them. This lecture will help you locate them, understand what information they can yield and use them to break down brick walls!
