This months speaker is Joy Neighbors

Joy will present 2 sessions about Cemeteries and Gravestones.

Session 1:  The Silent Language of the Stones: How to Read Gravestone Symbols

Symbols have been used on tombstones for centuries, but it wasn’t until the mid-1800s that this  secret language flourished. Victorians loved a secret, so they decorated graves with carvings,  symbols and statues that told a story about family relationships, religion, military service and  occupations, sometime even adding cynical asides. Stones also offer hints as to how the person  died. We’ll discuss the meanings of symbols and discover how to read this silent language.

Session 2:  Cluster Research in the Cemetery

Gain a deeper understanding into your ancestors lives by doing cluster research in the  cemetery. Utilizing the F.A.N. principle (Family, Friends, Acquaintances and Neighbors), we  can discover unknown relatives, gain a better grasp of our ancestor’s place in the community,  and bring more life context into a family’s world. Using cemetery cluster research, we’ll create  a more accurate picture of who our people were, who they had close relationships with, and  who affected their lives. Plus, we’ll find and explore a variety of interesting cemetery records.
