Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati's Historic German District

Don Heinrich Tolzmann

The IGGP conference scheduled for Cincinnati this July was canceled due to the pandemic.  Because none of us can go to Cincinnati, I thought we should bring a little Cincinnati to San Diego!  I am so excited about this one!!!!!

Don Heinrich Tolzmann presents "Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati’s Historic German District"

The Miami-Erie Canal connected Lake Erie in northern Ohio with the Ohio River in southern Ohio, and when it came to Cincinnati it was shaped like the letter “L” as it moved around the business district to flow into the Ohio River. Germans first settled in the elbow of the canal, and soon filled up the area north of the canal, and it was said that when one crossed it, one was going “Over-the-Rhine” into the German district. The rise, fall, and recent renaissance of Over-the-Rhine will be described, as well as the speaker's research on it
