  This lecture offers an introduction into important foundational concepts in Mexican genealogy research (names, jurisdictions and governmental entities, language resources, etc.), as well as an overview of the abundant church and civil records available online. 

   

  Session 2:  Researching Alta California Ancestors: Key Records and Repositories in Southern California.  (New Topic)

  Did you know there are many historical records with great genealogical value to explore right here in Southern California? In this lecture, we will review key records and repositories that are local to San Diego, Riverside, and Los Angeles counties. We will also cover important historical events and context to help identify additional resources for your research.

  Presenter Bio:   

  Lisa Medina is a professional genealogist and experienced lecturer, applying her background in teaching to all of her presentations. She is an alum of several genealogical institutes and education programs (ProGen, SLIG, Gen-Fed) and her research expertise is in Mexican genealogy. When not researching, Lisa is the Director of Admissions and University Registrar at California State University San Marcos.

These incredible individuals were born before the founding of the United States, survived the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and count more than 6,000 descendants between them.

  
  

  Presenter Bio:   Nicka Smith is a host, consultant, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She has extensive experience in researching the enslaved and their communities and is a valued expert in genealogy research along the Mississippi Delta.

  Nicka has diverse and varied experience in media with a background in audio, video, and written communications. She's appeared on TODAY Show, CNN, MSNBC, was featured on an Emmy winning episode of the series Who Do You Think You Are, and has been interviewed by Oakland Tribune, The Undefeated, National Geographic, and TIME. She is the host of BlackProGen LIVE, an innovative web show with more than 130 episodes focused on people of color genealogy and family history.

  She is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, a member of two lineage societies (Sons and Daughters of the Middle Passage (SDUSMP) and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)), and a past board member of the California Genealogical Society (CGS) and the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC). Nicka served as the chair of the Outreach and Education Committee for AAGSNC, and is the former project manager for the Alameda County, CA Youth Ancestral Project where more than 325 youth were taught the value of family history.

  Additionally, Nicka is the family historian and lead researcher for the Atlas family of Lake Providence, East Carroll, Louisiana, and guides and coaches an active group of family historians at the Who is Nicka Smith Patreon community.

  We invite you to join us on our annual trip to the FamilySearch Library this Fall. This experienced director-led trip allows researchers an opportunity to access millions of records from all over the world, attend classes taught by FamilySearch experts and collaborate with fellow member researchers.
  

  
  

  What is Included?

  •  Pre-Trip Meeting and a Pre-Trip Class “Preparing For A Research Trip”.
  •  Seven-night stay at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, located right next door to the FamilySearch Library. Each room has its own refrigerator and microwave.
  •  Two group dinners at the hotel.
  •  Tour and Orientation to the Library’s many collections and resources. 
  •  Two classes taught by FamilySearch genealogists.
  •  Experienced trip Directors to assist you during your stay.

  Member Registration Fees: This event is open to SDGS members only. However, non- members can register by paying a $30 SDGS membership fee. LINK to Membership
  

  • Single Registration* – For those who would like their own room: $1,195
  • Double Registration* – If two people are attending and would like to share a room, this is your best option: $1,650 (total registration, paid with one credit card, NOT per person)
  • Triple Registration* – If three people would like to share a room, this is a great option: $2,360* (total registration, paid with one credit card, NOT per person)

  
  

  *The fee is by the room – doubles/triples will pay with one credit card. One person registers and is in charge of collecting the room fees from their chosen roommate/s.
  *SDGS is not able to offer a non-researcher rate: all registrants will be able to attend the two dinners, Library tour and orientation, classes and receive a Goody Bag.
  

  * Airfare and local transportation are not included.

  
  

  Group size is limited so register early! A $100 non-refundable deposit, per room, by July 26, 2024, holds your reservation. The remaining balance is due no later than Friday, August 16, 2024.

  * Refunds: $100 deposit is non-refundable. No refunds after September 13, 2024.

Since then it has grown to incorporate many additional tools which help you understand your DNA results.
